Tom Cruise has once again parachuted into our lives with another installment of the Mission Impossible series, a franchise that let's be honest has never promised us more than a solid excuse to shun yard work for another Sunday. This latest film finds Tom not only leaping off buildings but also stepping into the role of producer, where his notorious obsession with detail really comes to the forefront.
Now, I've got a fair amount of respect for Tom. His work ethic is incessant and intense. Ever since Hollywood finally handed him the producer's reins and started taking his input seriously, there's been a noticeable uptick in the caliber of his films. Remember Top Gun: Maverick? Tom took a so-so ‘80s flick and transformed it into a box office behemoth that actually made sense even the jet dogfights, notoriously tough to pull off without looking like an arcade game. Plus, he was generous enough to feature his own Mustang P-51, the WWII plane that changed the tide of the war outgunning the German Messerschmitts.
But back to Mission Impossible. The latest escapade which managed to snag not one, but two Oscar nomination, frankly, nothing to write home about. Sure, it's entertaining. It has a decent plot, a somewhat intriguing concept, and is peppered with exceptional performances from some kick-ass female co-stars who bring more than just a touch of class to the stunt-heavy extravaganza.
Still, if Hollywood were to suddenly scrap plans for a sequel, I wouldn't exactly be shedding any tears. I'll concede, the motorbike scene was a genuine thrill, a testament to Tom doing his own daredevil stunts, which is always commendable. The character development, however, especially for "Grace," the so-called pocket thief, feels rushed and undercooked. Her sudden significance in Ethan’s life lacks the narrative groundwork that could make it believable.
So, enjoy your Sunday, folks. Whether you spend it with Mr. Cruise or not, I suspect it'll be just fine either way.
